I’ve been working with businesses in the South West for over two decades now, and there’s something I want to say clearly.
The quality of business happening in this region, in Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Bristol and beyond, is remarkable. The talent, the ambition, the craft, the commitment to doing things properly, it’s genuinely impressive, and it’s consistently underestimated, both from outside the region and sometimes from within it.
What I’ve also seen, consistently, is that many of the best businesses in the South West are running without the kind of strategic support that their counterparts in larger cities take for granted.
The support gap in owner-managed businesses
In a large organisation, strategic thinking is baked into the structure. There are boards, non-executive directors, strategy functions, external advisors, and a whole ecosystem of people whose job is to help the business see clearly, challenge assumptions, and make good decisions under pressure.
In an owner-managed SME, which describes the vast majority of South West businesses, that ecosystem simply doesn’t exist. The founder and the leadership team are usually brilliant at the work the business does. They are not always equipped, resourced, or positioned to also be the strategic brain of the organisation at the same time.
That’s not a failing. It’s just physics. There are only so many hours and only so much headspace, and most of it goes on the thing the business was built to do.
The result is that genuinely good businesses – businesses with strong client relationships, talented teams, and real growth potential- make strategic decisions on the fly, without the benefit of external challenge or independent perspective. Some of those decisions are fine. Some of them cost more than the business ever realises.
What good strategic support actually looks like
The best support we can offer a growing South West business is not a thick report or a complicated framework. It’s a trusted, experienced presence, someone who understands business deeply, who has no political stake in the outcome, and who can ask the questions that the people inside the business can’t quite bring themselves to ask.
It looks like a quarterly conversation that helps the leadership team step back from the day-to-day and think about direction. It looks like a challenge when a decision is being made for the wrong reasons. It looks like a framework that helps the team work together more coherently, and a planning rhythm that keeps the strategy alive rather than letting it gather dust.
It looks, in short, like the kind of support that makes good businesses better, and that is exactly what Justelle was built to provide.
A region worth investing in
The South West is growing. Bristol is one of the UK’s most dynamic business cities. Somerset, Devon and Dorset are attracting ambitious businesses and talented people who want to build something meaningful in a place worth living in.
Those businesses deserve strategic support that matches their ambition, practical, honest, and grounded in a genuine understanding of how owner-managed businesses actually work.
If you’re building something in the South West and would value a conversation with someone who genuinely cares about helping you get it right, we’d love to hear from you.
